When should I bring in my child?

Our office, as well as the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dental Association, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, all recommend establishing a “Dental Home” for your child by their first birthday. There are many reasons for this, including teaching them from an early age that going to the dentist can be a positive and fun experience. It also allows us to detect and manage early signs of cavities and to give you as parents the education and resources needed to help give your child a healthy smile.

What will you do at the first visit?

This depends on your child’s age and development. Some patients sit with their parents while we do an exam and introduce them to new things at the dental office. Older children will get their teeth polished and X-rays taken.  We always strive to get as much done for your child as we can while still creating a positive environment. After Dr. Bri has done an exam, she will go over any findings or treatment needs with you and answer any questions that you may have.

What should I do to prepare for the visit?

The best preparation for your child’s first visit to our office is maintaining a positive attitude. Children pick up on adults’ apprehensions, and if you make negative comments about trips to the dentist, your child could develop a fear of the dentist and act accordingly. Let your child know that it’s important to keep his teeth and gums healthy, and that the doctor will help him do that. Remember that we are specially trained to handle fears and anxiety, and our staff excels at putting children at ease during their appointment.
